Mexican Independence Day, celebrated on September 16th, is one of the most significant holidays in Mexico. Known as “El Grito de Dolores,” this day marks the beginning of the fight for Mexico’s independence from Spanish rule.

In Los Cabos, the festivities are a lively and fun way to celebrate with friends or spend time with family. Whether you’re a resident or a visitor, here are 4 ways you can join in on the festivities to celebrate Mexican Independence Day in Los Cabos.

1. The Grito de Dolores

The celebrations kick off on the evening of September 15th, when locals gather in town squares across Los Cabos to witness “El Grito,” the reenactment of the famous call to arms made by Miguel Hidalgo in 1810.

For those located or staying in Cabo San Lucas, you can witness the event at the plaza in front of the main delegation, on the road to Chedraui and Soriana supermarkets. You’ll find the plaza full of vendors selling local craft beer, mixed drinks, and street food.

However, the most popular place to join in on the festivities is at Plaza Mijares in San José del Cabo. Here, the mayor gives the traditional “grito,” or shout, of “¡Viva México!” You’ll witness a huge crowd waving flags and cheering enthusiastically, creating a sense of unity and patriotism.

The square is beautifully decorated with Mexican flags and lights, and the atmosphere is electric. The main streets around the plaza are closed off to traffic so pedestrians can enjoy the celebration safely. It will also be hard to find parking, so consider taking an Uber or taxi, or parking at the La Comer (also known as ‘the Mega’), then walking over.

If you feel like getting festive, be sure to wear Mexico’s national colors—red, white, and green—or get your face painted from a local artist in the square.

2. Parades and Traditional Dances

The next day, September 16th, is a federal holiday. All of the schools and most businesses are closed across the nation.

Los Cabos hosts parades while the community gathers to watch local school bands, charros (Mexican cowboys), and folkloric dancers make their way through the streets. Dancers perform traditional Mexican dances in colorful costumes, while the parade floats are decorated with themes related to Mexican history and culture.

This annual event offers an opportunity for locals and visitors to experience and appreciate Mexican heritage while mingling with the community.

3. Fireworks: A Spectacular Display

No Mexican Independence Day celebration is complete without fireworks.

As night falls on September 16th, the skies over Los Cabos light up with colorful pyrotechnic displays. These fireworks are often synchronized with music, making it a fun outing for individuals and families alike. Whether you’re at the beach or watching from your balcony, the sight of the colorful explosions reflecting off the ocean is truly magical.

Best Viewing Spots:

  • Medano Beach: For a beachfront view of the fireworks, Medano Beach is the perfect spot. Bring a blanket, some beverages, and settle in for a spectacular show.

  • Cabo San Lucas Marina: The marina offers another great vantage point, with the added bonus of being close to many restaurants and bars where you can continue the celebration after the fireworks.

4. Local Cuisine and Festivities

Food is a central part of any Mexican celebration, and Independence Day is no exception.

Throughout Los Cabos, restaurants and street vendors offer a variety of traditional dishes such as pozole (a hearty soup made with hominy and meat), chiles en nogada (stuffed chiles topped with walnut sauce and pomegranate seeds), and tacos al pastor. Many eateries also serve special Independence Day menus, featuring these and other Mexican delicacies.

You’ll also find plenty of venues hosting live music performances, featuring mariachi bands, regional music, and more. Dancing is encouraged, and you’ll often find locals and visitors alike getting involved in the fun.
